Local Technology Firm Works With UIC Students and Faculty to Further Development in Wireless Technology Applications

Aurora, Illinois, July 2005
-- To mentor and support the growth of Chicago-area technology talent, local wireless solutions developer Clarity Communication Systems has made a gift to the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, College of Engineering, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). This gift supports further development in wireless technology applications, particularly in the area of Location-Based Services (LBS).

As part of the relationship with Clarity, UIC students --supervised by Professor Roland Priemer -- are assisting in the beta testing of Clarity's WhereaboutsT.M. product, a Premium Family Safety and Personal Navigation Service that enables parents to use their cell phones or the Internet to instantly locate family members. After attending a training session at Clarity, students were assigned to provide user feedback as well as make recommendations for further product enhancements.

"Partnering with our academic institutions is a compelling way for businesses to take advantage of local talent -- as well as an efficient means to expose future employees to real-life projects," states Ralph Pini, UIC Associate Dean of Corporate Relations and Career Placement. "When these engineers enter the workforce, they are much better prepared and can make contributions more quickly."

"Working with UIC has allowed us to complement our workforce at Clarity with some very talented, young engineers," states Jim Fuentes, Clarity CEO. "Students participating in these kinds of work-study programs will have a better understanding of the actual process of bringing innovative, high tech products to market."
